Breed
Dog Training - Dog Activities
We have to know the nature of the Old English Sheepdog to choose the right activity for him. He loves to work to please his master, but he has his own little foibles, that are typical of the breed. He could find everlasting repetition boring after a while and he will act the clown, which will make you smile - if you have a heart for bobtails.
Agility can be done with the adult dog - but more in the way of fun rather than for serious competition. For the real Agility-Freak there will be a breed that is more adapted to it. We always had a bit of a problem as the long hair of the dogs gets caught and broken in the Slalom-stanchion.
For Example a Bobtail could be comfortable as a Therapy Dog or for working with handicapped, old or young people - he will conquer their hearts and will maybe get a better result for the therapist. Some OES visit in hospitals and homes for the elderly and are always made very welcome as a Bobtail will always make you smile. In the UK dogs can become PAT Dogs.
The bobtail can be trained in most activities but it is important that all of the party have fun.

For puppies from 8 weeks to about 16 weeks of age. It's highly recommended. This time is for socialising the puppy with other dogs and puppies so that later on in life the puppy knows how to approach other dogs it may meet and this is extremely important. Games with other puppies are a valuable learning exercise. The puppy will also learn how to approach new things it may experience in its environment and also meet other puppy owners. This is instructive for newcomers but everyone can learn and hear something new. |
